The risk of plague spreading between countries by means of international trade is a concern growing at worldwide scale. For this reason, a large number of countries have adopted some International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures amongst which the ISPM15 is included. This includes the directives regulating the wooden packaging material destined for export. This standard, drafted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), has as its objective the decrease of the risks of the spreading of plagues in exports.
The companies exporting to countries that have adopted the ISPM15 have the obligation to phytosanitarily treat the pallet by means of the adoption of two measures approved by the Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Spanish Ministry. These measures are the following:
Treatment by Methyl Bromide. Consists in the spraying of the packaging with Methyl Bromide. This treatment has many drawbacks, amongst which the waiting time required by the treatment and the toxicity of the methyl bromide, this making its use less common.
Heat Treatment . Consists in the package undergoing a temperature in such a way that the heart of the wood reaches 56ºC for 30 minutes. This treatment is safe, effective, innocuous and does not have any legal implication.
